Short Description

Research Scientist – Cryogenic HEMT/Quantum Transport (NQFF)

We are seeking a highly motivated Research Scientist with a strong background in quantum transport and low-temperature measurements to join the National Quantum Federated Foundry (NQFF) at the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE), A*STAR.

This role focuses on the design, fabrication, and cryogenic characterisation of high-electron-mobility transistor (HEMT) and qubit devices. The successful candidate will work at the interface of nanofabrication, cryogenic electronic development, and qubit measurement, contributing to the development of robust device platforms and process recipes that support quantum research across the NQFF ecosystem.

Research Scope

The Position Is Centred On, But Not Limited To

  • Development of cryogenic-optimised HEMTs for applications in cryogenic low-noise amplifier and qubit readout
  • Establishing repeatable, well-documented fabrication processes suitable for shared foundry use
  • Bridging device fabrication and cryogenic transport measurements
  • Development of qubit manipulation and readout protocols at cryogenic temperatures

This role is ideal for candidates with a background in low-temperature transport physics who are interested in translating laboratory-scale devices into reliable, scalable quantum hardware platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and fabrication of semiconductor HEMT devices.
  • Development and optimisation of nanofabrication processes (lithography, etching, deposition, passivation).
  • Electrical characterisation (DC and RF) of devices from room temperature down to cryogenic temperatures.
  • Analysis of transport behaviour (conductance, transconductance, leakage, noise) with feedback into device and process optimisation.
  • Setup and execution of low-noise, cryogenic transport measurements and perform qubit manipulation and readout.
  • Documentation of fabrication recipes, device performance, and experimental protocols for shared use within NQFF.
  • Preparation of manuscripts, technical reports, and contributions to grant proposals.
  • Collaborate with materials, quantum device, and circuit teams within A*STAR and external academic partners.

Job Requirements

  • PhD in Physics, Applied Physics, Materials Science, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Strong background in quantum or mesoscopic transport experiments, especially at cryogenic temperatures.
  • Hands-on experience with semiconductor device fabrication and/or measurements.
  • Familiarity with lithography, etching and deposition processes; hands on experience with III–V semiconductors or Silicon/Germanium is highly advantageous.
  • Experience with low-noise electrical measurements, dilution refrigerators, cryostats, and transport data analysis.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a collaborative, platform-focused research environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills in English.

Why Join the National Quantum Federated Foundry

  • Work at a national-level quantum fabrication and technology platform.
  • Combine hands-on nanofabrication with low-temperature quantum transport physics.
  • Access to world-class cleanroom fabrication facilities.
  • Exposure to a broad range of quantum technologies and collaborators through the NQFF ecosystem.
  • Opportunity to contribute to the development of next-generation quantum computing and sensing hardware.
