Full job description
We are seeking a highly hands-on and practical Chief Engineer to manage the operation and maintenance of all engine room and technical systems onboard the vessel.
This role requires a strong working approach, where the Chief Engineer is personally involved in troubleshooting, maintenance, and day-to-day engine room activities, not limited to supervision. The successful candidate will ensure reliable vessel operations through direct technical involvement and close coordination with the Master and shore-based team.
Candidates with relevant vessel operational experience will have an advantage
Key Responsibilities:
Engine Room & Technical Operations
Take charge of daily engine room operations, ensuring all machinery is functioning safely and efficiently.
Be personally involved in operation, inspection, and troubleshooting of main engines and auxiliary systems.
Maintain operational readiness of all equipment to support vessel activities.
Monitor fuel usage and machinery condition on a day-to-day basis.
Hands-On Maintenance & Troubleshooting
Perform and supervise hands-on maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of machinery and equipment.
Identify technical issues early and take practical corrective actions onboard.
Ensure maintenance is carried out in accordance with planned maintenance systems (PMS).
Maintain accurate records of work performed and spare parts usage.
Operational Support
Support safe and efficient execution of vessel operations in coordination with the Master and crew.
Ensure proper operation of pumps, valves, and related systems during fuel transfer activities.
Remain actively involved during critical operations to ensure safety and reliability.
Crew Supervision (Working Leadership)
Supervise engine crew while remaining actively involved in execution of tasks.
Guide and train crew through practical, on-the-job involvement.
Ensure engine room tasks are completed properly and safely
Shore Coordination & Technical Alignment
Report technical issues and maintenance needs to Technical Superintendent.
Work closely with shore-based team to resolve technical problems.
Provide updates on vessel condition and recurring issues.
Inventory & Resource Management
Manage spare parts, tools, and engine stores inventory onboard.
Coordinate requisition of spare parts and technical supplies with shore-based teams.
Ensure proper inventory control and cost-effective utilisation of resources.
General Responsibilities
Maintain engine room cleanliness, organisation, and readiness.
Ensure safe working practices and compliance with basic regulatory requirements.
Support cost-conscious use of spare parts and consumables.
Participate in emergency response when required.
Undertake additional duties as assigned by the Master or Management.
Job Requirements:
Valid Chief Engineer Certificate of Competency (COC) in accordance with STCW requirements.
Minimum 5–10 years of sailing experience, including experience as Second Engineer or Chief Engineer.
Strong hands-on experience in machinery maintenance and troubleshooting.
Familiarity with planned maintenance systems (PMS).
Practical, working-style approach (not purely supervisory).
Ability to work closely with crew and be involved in day-to-day technical tasks.
Good communication skills in English.
