Job Summary
The Laboratory Designer is responsible for the planning, design, and coordination of laboratory furniture systems, fume hoods, biosafety cabinets, and laboratory equipment layouts. The role involves translating client requirements into practical, compliant, and efficient laboratory designs while coordinating with sales, engineering, suppliers, and project teams throughout the project lifecycle.
The ideal candidate possesses strong technical knowledge of laboratory furniture systems, laboratory workflows, ventilation requirements, and laboratory safety standards.

Key Responsibilities
Laboratory Design & Space Planning
- Develop laboratory layouts based on client requirements, workflow, and operational needs.
- Design laboratory furniture systems including: Workbenches, Island benchesWall benches, Sink benches, Storage cabinets, Reagent shelving, Mobile laboratory furniture
- Prepare equipment layouts for: Fume hoods, Biosafety cabinets, Laminar flow cabinets, Chemical storage cabinets, Laboratory appliances and instruments
- Optimize space utilization while maintaining safety, ergonomics, and functionality.
Fume Hood & Laboratory Equipment Design
- Review laboratory processes and recommend suitable fume hood configurations.
- Coordinate utility requirements for fume hoods including: Exhaust ducting, Airflow requirements, Electrical services, Water and gas services
- Ensure proper placement and clearance requirements for fume hoods and laboratory equipment.
- Coordinate with manufacturers and suppliers on technical specifications and installation requirements.
Drawing & Documentation
- Prepare: Laboratory furniture layouts, Equipment layouts, Elevation drawings, Shop drawings. Detail drawings, Utility coordination drawings, As-built drawings.
- Generate material schedules and furniture specifications.
- Assist in preparation of project proposals and technical submissions.
Coordination & Project Support
- Attend client meetings, site surveys, and design coordination meetings.
- Liaise with architects, consultants, contractors, and end-users.
- Coordinate with project teams during installation and commissioning.
- Review site conditions and provide design solutions when required.
- Support sales and project teams with technical presentations and design proposals.
Compliance & Quality Assurance
- Ensure designs comply with relevant laboratory standards, safety requirements, and client specifications.
- Verify laboratory furniture and equipment selections meet operational and safety requirements.
- Review shop drawings and installation works for compliance with approved designs.
Requirements
Education
- Diploma or Degree in: Interior Design, Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, Building Services Engineering Or related disciplines
Experience
- Minimum 2 years of experience in laboratory design, laboratory furniture design, interior fit-out, or related fields.
- Experience with laboratory furniture systems and fume hood planning is highly preferred.
Technical Skills
- Proficient in: AutoCAD, Revit (preferred)SketchUp (preferred)Microsoft Office
- Strong understanding of: Laboratory furniture systems, Fume hood applications and requirements, Laboratory workflow planning, Mechanical and utility coordination, Shop drawing preparation
- Ability to interpret architectural and M&E drawings.
