Job Summary

The Senior Manager, Engineering is accountable for leading Engineering & Maintenance execution to ensure plant production systems are reliable, safe, compliant, and capable of meeting operational targets. The role drives proactive reliability programs, structured problem solving, SAP PM discipline, and team capability building—ensuring maintenance practices, breakdown response, and continuous improvement are aligned with production, quality, safety, regulatory, budgetary, and sustainability objectives.

Major Duties, Responsibilities & Accountabilities:

Engineering & Maintenance

  • Lead a high-performing engineering and maintenance team, providing strong technical leadership to Plant Operations and Maintenance.
  • Define and execute maintenance strategies to maximize equipment reliability, minimize downtime, and reduce overtime costs.
  • Support troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and corrective/preventive actions across food processing, packaging, electrical, and controls systems.
  • Establish preventive and predictive maintenance programs; partner with International Business Unit to integrate SAP PM Module and embed continuous improvement practices (work management, PM compliance, planning/scheduling discipline, data quality).
  • Collaborate with Spare-Parts team on spare parts strategy, critical spares, and inventory controls to ensure uninterrupted operations.
  • Provide timely technical support to production teams to maintain output, food safety, and product quality.
  • Identify and implement productivity, throughput, and cost-efficiency improvements across manufacturing lines.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Safety, Quality, Operation Excellence, Supply Chain, Procurement, and R&D to align engineering solutions with product, regulatory, and commercial requirements.
  • Control repair and maintenance (R&M) spending to budget; ensure appropriate cost tracking, downtime reporting, and performance visibility.

Capital Program (Plant-Based Support & Execution)

  • Support the Chief Engineer in developing and delivering plant capital projects by providing technical scope definition, feasibility input, risk assessment, and standards/GMP review.
  • Lead assigned end-to-end project execution for engineering-driven projects (design review, contractor coordination, installation planning, commissioning, and handover).
  • Ensure project turnover readiness: updated asset registers, spare parts lists, manuals, job plans, maintenance strategies, LOTO plan, and training documentation for new installations.

Utilities & Process Safety Partnership (Collaboration Role)

  • Partner closely with the Utilities Manager / Utilities & Facilities leaders to align production equipment requirements (capacity, uptime, operating windows) with utility system availability, minimizing production disruption.
  • Coordinate with Safety and Utilities to ensure maintenance activities on utility-connected production assets support Ammonia PSM/RMP requirements that impact maintenance practices (MOC, mechanical integrity interfaces, permit-to-work, LOTO, Working at Height, Confined Space and contractor safety).
  • Co-deliver energy-saving and reliability initiatives with the Utilities Manager where production equipment performance is the primary driver (e.g., demand reduction, leak reduction, controls optimization, right-sizing, start/stop logic, heat loss reduction at equipment interfaces), converting opportunities into executable work plans and sustaining them through SAP PM and CI routines.

Continuous Improvement & Team Development

  • Champion continuous improvement initiatives (Kaizen, Lean, Six Sigma) to enhance safety, quality, capacity, cost efficiency, and sustainability within Engineering & Maintenance scope.
  • Conduct on-site assessments to identify productivity and cost-saving opportunities, translating findings into actionable roadmaps and maintenance/reliability countermeasures.
  • Build technical capability through training, mentoring, and knowledge sharing to instill accountability, urgency, and responsiveness across engineers, supervisors, and technicians.
  • Drive long-term operational excellence by embedding a culture of proactive reliability, compliance, and continuous improvement.

Qualifications/EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Relevant professional certifications (e.g., CMRP, PE/Chartered Engineer, OSHA/PSM, NEBOSH) considered an added advantage.
  • Minimum 10–12 years of progressive experience in engineering and maintenance within manufacturing or regulated industries (food manufacturing preferred).
  • At least 3–5 years in leadership/managerial roles with demonstrated ability to lead multi-discipline teams and deliver measurable reliability improvement.
  • Demonstrated success in reducing breakdowns, improving PM/PdM effectiveness, controlling OT costs, and building team capability.

Technical Competencies

  • Reliability engineering and preventive/predictive maintenance expertise.
  • Strong mechanical/electrical troubleshooting and structured RCA (CAPA, failure modes, repeat-failure elimination).
  • SAP PM (or equivalent CMMS/EAM): planning & scheduling, master data discipline, reporting, and work management best practices.
  • Food manufacturing regulatory and GMP awareness (safety, quality, environmental expectations).
  • Cost control and budget management for R&M.
  • Spare parts strategy and inventory management (critical spares, min/max, obsolescence risk).
  • Continuous improvement methodologies (Lean, Kaizen, Six Sigma).
  • Vendor/contractor management and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Working knowledge to partner effectively on utilities interfaces and ammonia PSM/RMP constraints (not the utilities O&M owner).

Behavioural Competencies

  • Accountability & Urgency: Demonstrates ownership of outcomes, ensures timely follow-through, and instills urgency in the team.
  • Leadership & Team Development: Builds high-performing teams, mentors staff, and fosters a culture of responsibility and responsiveness.
  • Problem-Solving & Decision-Making: Applies structured analysis to complex issues, makes sound decisions balancing reliability, cost, and compliance.
  • Collaboration & Influence: Works effectively across functions and stakeholders, aligning teams toward common goals.
  • Communication & Transparency: Communicates technical issues clearly; maintains audit-ready documentation.
  • Continuous Improvement Mindset, Resilience & Adaptability, Ethics & Compliance Orientation.

Other Requirements

  • Willingness to be on-site regularly and respond to urgent plant issues outside normal working hours.
  • Ability to travel occasionally to other sites, vendors, or corporate/regulatory engagements as required.
  • Physical & Safety Requirements
  • Comfortable working in manufacturing environments with exposure to noise, heat, and industrial equipment.
  • Adherence to all company safety mandates and ensure team members compliant.
  • Technology & Systems
  • Proficiency in SAP PM or equivalent maintenance management systems; familiarity with digital maintenance tools and energy monitoring platforms.
  • Regulatory & Compliance Orientation / Leadership Expectations
  • Commitment to audit-ready documentation and compliance; strong interpersonal skills to foster collaboration across Operations, Safety, Quality, Supply Chain, and R&D.
