Your daily commute doesn't have to be a complete waste of time. Experts say with some vital planning, you can simply use your commute to recharge and increase productivity.

If you're taking the bus or the LRT (or even walking), you should use the time to set the tone for the rest of your day. Suppose you're interested in finishing some work or just relaxing. In that case, there are activities you can do to turn a dull commute from a frustrating time-eater to a pleasant and productive time of day.

Here are 9 productive things you can do during your commute:

Don't know what to do while sitting in the MRT? Try these activities.

1. Play games that help sharpen your mind

If silly mobile games are what genuinely relax you, it's alright to pamper yourself from time to time. But consider playing games like sudoku or other brain games. These games have been said to help strengthen your memory.

2. Self-reflect

Take the time every week during your commute to check your goals. It is a great way to stay on course and make adjustments. It's also the perfect time to ponder about what makes you happy and what you can do to improve your life.

3. Check your inbox

If you're not driving, you can use your morning commute to get prepared on your workday. Check your inbox will set you up for a productive day. Though experts say, you shouldn't spend your whole commute doing work so maybe just spend a few minutes to check your email and do something else.

4. Listen to music, podcast, or audiobooks.

Many experts say that these activities support your continuous learning and development. If you feel that music helps to perk you up and prepare you for work, then you should totally keep it up! Some podcasts have helpful topics that are related to work.

5. Take the time to mentally prepare

You can use the time to get ready for what's on your calendar. If you have a presentation, you can rehearse and put some finishing touches. If there's an important meeting in the afternoon, ensure that you know what you're going to cover and your view on the subject matter.

6. Write a to-do list

It is the perfect time to write a to-do list or fine-tune the one you already have. When you create a to-do list and focus on the day's responsibilities, you will have a more organised workday.

Can't write (or type)? Even a mental checklist can be useful. You should also consider using a voice recorder or memo app on your smartphone.

7. Learn new things

There are many learning apps out there. You can use the time to catch up on the news, develop your knowledge in a particular field, or even learn a new language!

8. Keep up with your friends and family

You may not have the time to call your friends and family for the rest of the day, so use your commute time to check in with your parents, chat with your significant other, or WhatsApp your friends (as long as you're not driving).

9. Take a power nap

Depending on your commute, you could even catch a power nap, which can give you a boost of energy. Studies have shown that 10 to 15-minute naps can be very refreshing for the mind and body. Just remember to set your alarm, and close your eyes.
